You know, I find it interesting when animal rights activists or vegans/vegetarians resort to using Gandhi quotes to try and win an argument. I just don't understand the logic in that. Is that some sort of fail Appeal to Authority? Do they not understand that Gandhi ate meat or something?

It is even written in his autobiography. His friend Sheik Mehtab was the one who eventually convinced him to try eating meat (goat).

"We are a weak people because we do not eat meat. The English are able to rule over us, because they are meat-eaters. You know how hardy I am, and how great a runner too. It is because I am a meat-eater. Meat-eaters do not have boils or tumours, and even if they sometimes happen to have any, these heal quickly. Our teachers and other distinguished people who eat meat are no fools. They know its virtues. You should do likewise. There is nothing like trying. Try, and see what strength it gives."

He only abstained from it because he wanted to honor his parents, not based on vegan ideals.

You know many people ate meat before becoming vegan , I do not see why in this case ,gandhi could not have his experience.
There is nothing wrong to use Gandhi quotes that talk of love and respect for animals since he chose not to eat them to respect them and respect life itself of every being.

Two different situations if you're using a quote to talk about love and respect, versus trying to win an argument. Too many times I have seen vegans say, "OMG SEE, THESE PEOPLE ARE VEGAN, THEREFORE IT MEANS BEING VEGAN IS RIGHT."

Not only that, but Gandhi only abstained from continuing to eat meat to honor his parents, not vegan idealism.

Yeah I'm totally agree. More people use quotes in wrong, vegans or not they are.
There are people who become vegan for health or problems with cholesterol and lactose,
and they also found the ethical value. So If he did it for parents or for God, I don't think it's
more important than what this choice resulted in him, what he understood, what he felt and then what he handed down,
and it's true he avoided meat when was young in deference to his vote for the parents but after reading Henry Salt's book
"The justification of vegetarianism" decided to become a vegetarian for personal choice.

By the way it's good be informed : ) who will see this stamp will know that gandhi ate meat,
but this does not mean that what he said on animals is wrong.

This is interesting. I'd always heard that he was a vegetarian, and I've seen so many vegetarians appeal to Ghandi's authority when explaining why their diet is better. He didn't do it for the animals, he did it for his parents? What about his parents did he do it for? Was it inspired by their deaths, or did he ever elaborate on that?

Great question. All I remember from the book is that he said he didn't really like the meat taste, but the milk didn't really bother him. What's funny is that the vegans/vegetarians often cite him as an animal rights activist when he clearly states in his books that he was for welfare of all living things.

your point? Humans are cruel to those animals. And thus I'm a vegan.

My point is written clearly in the stamp description.

You do realize Gandhi was a vegetarian right? [link] I respect the fact that you have your own diet and all that, and yes, Gandhi did become a vegetarian to honor his Hindu parents, but he still abstained and supported the lifestyle to support the rights of animals.

I never said he wasn't a vegetarian? Perhaps you didn't actually read the stamp description. It was made because people seem to think that using Gandhi quotes will maybe somehow win them their argument. Also, Gandhi was never for animal "rights". Gandhi was a pacifist, he support animal welfare.

PS. A vegan site to support your claim doesn't really do much, either. That site is completely full of propaganda. Have you read Gandhi's autobiography? I have. In it, it clearly states that he ate meat.
